The principle objective of this layout is to respond to the characteristics of the site, which has evolved over the last 150 years. The Mill buildings have responded to the hillside topography by being developed in a series of six plateaus climbing up from Bolton Road at the bottom to Equity Street at the top. Following the demolition of the mill these plateaus are to be retained, thus allowing for six separate phases of development.
All of the dwellings are angled towards Bolton Road, which due to the plateau levels will afford all the properties views across the town to the hills beyond. The layout has been designed to create a safe pedestrian route by the introduction of a footpath link from the proposed pedestrian crossing on Bolton Road up through all of the developments plateaus. Hard and soft landscaping will add benefit to this pedestrian environment.
Located a few minutes walk from the town centre, the development re-establishes the historic urban grain of the relatively dense back of pavement buildings but in a modern way. The scheme thereby repairs the urban grid and completes the matrix of buildings defining the existing narrow street patterns.
