A 344m2 replacement dwelling set on the site of a former 1960’s detached property. The new house provides all the facilities for a modern family home, though also designed to allow the house to evolve as the family grow. Emphasis was on providing a sanctuary area away from the more noisy children’s area.
The site is on an elevated sloping site with excellent views over the Lancashire plain. The design had to make best use of these views and evolved into a tiered structure providing three distinct sectors to the house.
These formed a central entrance area, the noisy family area and the sanctuary area.
The family area is open plan on the upper floor with an extensive balcony area; the entrance area provides circulation and is topped with a viewing / contemplation tower. The sanctuary area houses the bedrooms, kitchen and bathrooms together with a garage.
The building uses a natural palette of materials, stone, timber, copper and slate; these complement the rock face and the trees on the site.
Internally the glazed balcony allows uninterrupted views of the landscape beyond and the clerestory roof lights bathe the vaulted interior with natural light.
The central circulation area is filled with a glass staircase leading up to the contemplation area at the top of the tower. The floor of this is glazed providing a dramatic view from the room.
The sanctuary area houses the bedrooms, kitchen and bathrooms and provides a quieter, private area away from the noisy area.
The property has generated extensive interest and discussion and was awarded the best residential building for the area and is both loved and loathed by the general public.
